Greyhound Rescue West of England.
GRWE takes in greyhounds and lurchers from members of the public, veterinary surgeries, dog wardens and the police. We also help trainers and owners rehome their racing greyhounds and some dogs also come to us from general rescue centres. Some greyhounds also come from as far afield as Ireland and Scotland if resources allow.

Wimbledon Greyhound Welfare.
We actively promote the fact that Greyhounds make wonderful pets and adapt to life outside of the kennels very well. We operate a 'No Destruction' policy, which means that no dog will be put to sleep except on health grounds, when there is no other option. All we have achieved, all that we do, is down to the efforts and sheer determination of our kennel staff, friends and volunteers, who believe, as we do, that every greyhound deserves a life after racing.

The Greyhound Awareness League.
The Greyhound Awareness League is dedicated to rescuing and re-homing ex-racing, ex-working, abandoned greyhounds and lurchers. The Greyhound Awareness League is dedicated to raising public awareness of the plight of the retired greyhound. Its aim is to encourage members of the public to meet and hopefully adopt greyhounds and lurchers and to dispel many of the myths surrounding these beautiful, gentle dogs. GAL is a non-profit making organisation, run entirely by volunteers, which gained charitable status in March 2001.
(Scottish Charity No. SC 031037).

Team Are We Nearly There Yet?
Travelling by foot and ski we will each have to drag all our equipment in a pulk (sledge) weighing over 150lbs across mainly frozen sea ice. On route we will have to negotiate vast ice ridges and ice boulder fields, which are caused by ice flows colliding with one another forcing the ice to pile up at the point of contact forming ridges. The route we will take also leads through the migratory route of 80% of the world's polar bears. Arctic Temperatures regularly fall as low as -50°c, if you include wind chill this can plummet further to -70°c. Such temperatures can quickly cause frost bite on any part of uncovered skin. On route there are only two checkpoints where we will be able to get a resupply of food and if necessary were airlifted out.

The Blue Greyhound
Bessie was a beautiful blue greyhound girl, born in Ireland in 1993. She'd been bred for the greyhound racing industry. In November 1997 Bessie was picked up as a stray in Barnsley in a dreadful emaciated state with mange and evidence that she had recently had a litter of puppies. Bessie went to a newly established rescue whereby in February 1998 she was adopted by Susan and her family. Bessie inspired Susan to raise funds for the rescue as well as promote greyhounds as pets. Most weeks they were out within the Huddersfield area raising funds, during this time Bessie became very well known and there were many articles about her in the local paper. After six years of raising funds Bessie retired at the age of ten, all that 'meeting and greeting' just became too tiring for her. Over the years Bessie had raised funds as well as inspiring many people to adopt a greyhound. At the age of 13, on 14th May 2007 Bessie had to be put to sleep. She had developed lung cancer and had begun to suffer. In Bessie's memory, Susan founded The Blue Greyhound to raise funds for as many rescue dogs as possible, as well as working to highlight the plight of the racing greyhound.

Cass Collars.
A martingale collar is different from a traditional side release collar in that it comprises 2 loops - a larger one that fits over your sighthound's head and adjusts down, and a smaller (control loop) that has a d-ring securely sewn in to attach your lead to for walking. The front smaller ( control) loop is attached to the larger loop by slides (or loops/d-rings - ALWAYS make sure these are welded or pressed brass for your sighthound's safety).
